Getting into the Grown-ups area

Tap For grown-ups at the bottom of Home (or in the profile switcher). Press and hold the lock for two seconds, then type the number shown in words using the keys. For "forty-seven thousand, two hundred six", type 47206. Got it wrong? You get a new number. If you leave the app for more than two minutes, Tallywick asks again.

How do I add this week's spelling list?

  1. Open Grown-ups and pick your child.
  2. In their settings card, tap Spelling list.
  3. Choose how to add the words: Scan the school sheet with the camera, Choose a photo of the sheet, Paste or type one word per line (add a sentence after a dash if you like: because - I stayed in because it rained.), Import a file (.txt or .csv: word, sentence).
  4. Check the words. You see every word before it's saved, and you can fix, add, delete or reorder them.

Your child then practises them in Letter Lane, in "This week's list". Words keep their progress if they come back on a later list. Photos and files are read on the device and never leave it.

What's the difference between Little and Big mode?

Tallywick picks a mode from the age chosen when the child is set up. Change it any time in Grown-ups → your child's settings → Mode. Progress is kept.

Why doesn't the bar fill in one day?

Because a fact (or word) only counts as mastered once your child has answered it quickly on two different days. Getting it right ten times in one afternoon shows it's fresh in mind; getting it fast again after a night's sleep shows it has stuck. So Tallywick spaces each one out: it comes back a day or two later, then after longer and longer gaps.

Every round still counts. Facts your child has started but not yet mastered are growing: the progress bars show them as a lighter, striped stretch after the solid mastered part, and the end of each round says how many are growing and when they can lock in ("6 facts are growing! They can lock in on Thursday."). There's no daily limit, so play as much as your child likes; coming back on another day is what turns the stripes solid.

The voice sounds robotic. Can I get a better one?

Yes, for free. Tallywick uses the best English voice installed on the device. To download a more natural one:

Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → English, pick a voice such as Ava, and download the Premium version.

Tallywick switches to it the next time you open the app. Grown-ups → Read-aloud voice shows which voice is in use and plays a sample. Read aloud follows the silent switch, so check it if you hear nothing.

How does sync between iPhone and iPad work?

If both devices are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account, a child's profile, stars and progress follow them automatically, through your family's own private iCloud storage. There's nothing to set up and no account to make. Grown-ups → iCloud sync shows whether sync is on and when it last synced.

How do I set a daily reminder?

Grown-ups → Daily reminder. Turn it on, pick the time and days. iOS asks once to allow notifications. Reminders come from the device, not from a server.

How do I start a child over, or reset everything?

Is there anything to buy? Any ads?

No ads, no in-app purchases, no accounts and no tracking. Stars are earned by practising and spent on clothes for the critter. They're never real money.
