Tallywick Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 19, 2026
Tallywick is a learning app for children that practises times tables, adding, taking away, sight words and spelling. We wrote this policy for parents, in plain words. The short version: we don't collect anything. Your child's profile and progress stay on your devices and, if you use iCloud, in your family's own private iCloud storage, which we can't see.
What Tallywick stores, and where
When you set up a child, Tallywick stores:
- the first name or nickname you or your child type in,
- the critter (the animal buddy) they pick,
- their age (5 to 11), which sets Little or Big mode,
- their learning progress: which facts and words they know, answers and timings used to choose the next practice, stars earned and spent, and the clothes and themes they chose for their critter,
- any spelling list a grown-up adds (the words, and an example sentence for each if you typed one),
- settings such as subjects, read-aloud and daily reminders.
This is stored on your device. If the device is signed in to iCloud, Tallywick also keeps a copy in your own private iCloud database, so a child's progress follows them between your iPhone and iPad on the same Apple Account. Apple runs iCloud; the private database belongs to your Apple Account. We, the developer, have no access to it and never receive a copy.
Reminder settings, sound settings and the read-aloud voice stay on each device and aren't synced.
What we never collect or share
- We collect no personal information from anyone, child or adult.
- No accounts and no sign-up. No email, phone number, photo, birthday, location or contacts.
- No advertising, no analytics, no tracking, no third-party code that sends data anywhere.
- No in-app purchases.
- Nothing is sold, shared or sent to us or to anyone else.
The app talks to the internet only through Apple's iCloud, and only to your family's private database.
Speech and reading the spelling sheet
- Read aloud. Tallywick speaks problems and words with the voices built into iOS. Speech is made on the device. No audio is recorded, and the app never uses the microphone.
- Scanning a spelling list. In the Grown-ups area you can scan a school spelling sheet with the camera, or pick a photo or a text file. Apple's on-device text recognition reads the words. The picture is used only to read the words, is never saved and never leaves the device. You check every word before it's saved.
Camera, photos and files
Tallywick asks to use the camera only when a grown-up taps "Scan the school sheet", inside the Grown-ups area. Choosing a photo or a file uses Apple's pickers, which give the app only the item you pick; Tallywick doesn't get access to your photo library or files.
Notifications
A grown-up can turn on a daily practice reminder in the Grown-ups area. iOS then asks permission to show notifications. Reminders are scheduled on the device and can include your child's name and buddy. Nothing is sent from a server. Turn them off in Grown-ups or in iOS Settings at any time.
The Grown-ups area
Settings, progress reports, the spelling-list scanner, reminders, and renaming or removing a child sit behind a grown-ups check: press and hold, then type a number written in words. Children can't reach links, permission requests or settings without it. Tallywick has no links to websites.
Deleting your data
- Delete one child: open Grown-ups, tap the menu next to the child's name and choose Delete. Their profile, progress, stars and closet are removed from this device, from your family's other devices and from your family's iCloud. With iCloud on, all of the child's data in your private iCloud storage is deleted; Tallywick keeps only a random ID number and the date of the deletion there (no name or other information), so your other devices know the child was deleted and don't upload them again. A device that is offline removes the child the next time it connects.
- Delete everything: delete Tallywick from each device (this removes all data on that device). Then, to clear iCloud, open Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Storage (or Manage Account Storage), choose Tallywick and Delete Data. Do this after removing the app from every device, or a device that still has the app will upload its copy again.
- Turning iCloud off for the device keeps everything on the device only.
Because we hold none of your data, we can't look up, export or delete it for you; these steps put you fully in control.
Children's privacy
Tallywick is made for children and follows the rules for Apple's Kids Category. We do not collect personal information from children, as defined by the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), or from anyone else. We don't share any information with third parties, show ads, or track children. Under the EU GDPR and the UK Age Appropriate Design Code, the same applies: no data comes to us, privacy is on by default, there's no geolocation and no profiling for anything other than choosing the next practice question on the device.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update it here and change the effective date. If a future version ever needed to collect anything, we would ask a parent first and explain exactly what and why.
